WBB Takes Control Over York From Start To Finish
Currently sitting fourth in the KCAC standings with a 9-5 record, the Bluejays hosted York University (5-9) Thursday evening. York's last win was on the road at Avila on January 11.
York came out in a press that the Bluejay offense broke easily, but struggled with turnovers in the halfcourt. After an offensive rebound by Kloe Bowin (SO/Tahlequah, Okla.), Ja'Neysha Hendricks (SO/Topeka, Kan.) sparked the Bluejay offense with a corner three. It didn't take long for Allie Ostermann (JR/Manhattan, Kan.) to score off the bench, as Hendricks gave her a bounce pass on a backdoor cut for a layup. On the next offensive possession, Ostermann hit the Bluejays' second three of the game to take a 9-2 lead.
The Panthers got a three in transition off a Bluejay turnover, but Zoe Rust (SR/Gore, Okla.) answered with 4 straight of her own with a bucket and a pair of free throws. Before the end of the quarter, Tabor broke the press again as Rust found Alicia Baker (JR/Purcell, Okla.) cutting down the middle. Baker made the layup and put the Bluejays ahead 16-9 entering the second quarter.
Tabor's first 9 points of the second were three point looks from Alyvia Owens (JR/Hutchinson, Kan.), Allie Ostermann, and Madie McCoy (JR/Wellsville, Kan.). York showed zone on one possession that led to Teegan Werth (SO/Hillsboro, Kan.) getting free on the arc for the fourth Bluejay three of the period. Tabor continued to shred York's defense as Werth assisted Kloe Bowin down low and Ja'Neysha Hendricks picked up a steal, then pitched ahead to Miyah McGee (SO/Ardmore, Okla.) for a runout layup.
York hit a three after calling a timeout to cut the lead to 32-15. Kloe Bowin hit back-to-back buckets in the final minute to put the Bluejays up 21 at the break. Tabor logged 9 assists in the half and shot 52% from the field. York outrebounded Tabor in the first half (16-14), but only shot 26% on 23 shots.
Tabor continued to share the ball well in the third quarter, as five different Bluejays scored in the first 6 minutes on four assists. York made some shots periodically, but would not cut into the point deficit. Miyah McGee hit a mid-range jumper, Ja'Neysha Hendricks drained another three, and Kloe Bowin finished the quarter with a free throw to bring the score to 57-26.
Halfway through the fourth quarter, the Bluejays held a 30 point lead and began to get into their bench. Jordyn Lowrie (JR/Oakley, Kan.) had an offensive put-back followed by a pair of free throws from Katariina Kaikkonen (SR/Helsinki, Finland). Kylie Arnold (FR/Salina, Kan.) finished out the Bluejay scoring at the free throw line, going 1-2. Tabor now moves to 10-5 in conference play with a home victory over York, 70-43.
Tabor was led in scoring by Kloe Bowin with 12 and also rebounds with 6. Teegan Werth logged a game-high 5 assists. Ja'Neysha Hendricks and Allie Ostermann each picked up 3 steals.
