Derby Police Chief Robert Lee will retire on July 4, 2023, after a 42-year law enforcement career.

“Derby has been an amazing place to work in the second part of my career,” said Robert Lee, Police Chief. “I feel like I have accomplished everything I set out to do, and now it’s time to step down and allow others to lead the department.”

Chief Lee has served the City of Derby since March 2009. His guidance has been instrumental in earning national CALEA accreditation for the department (one of 11 departments in Kansas), making the move towards community-based policing, helping lead the department through the pandemic, and working with officer beat team projects such as a Shoplifting Response Team to deter thefts at major retailers among other accomplishments.  The part one crime rate in Derby is lower today than it was in 2009. Considering the growth the City has experienced, this is a tremendous team and community accomplishment.

“The leadership that Chief Lee has provided during his career in Derby is invaluable,” said Kiel Mangus, City Manager. “He is a dedicated public servant who put a strong emphasis on community policing and police officers being active and involved in the community, himself included. I will miss his straight-shooting attitude and approach to law enforcement. I wish him the best in this next stage of life.”

Before coming to Derby, Chief Lee served in the Wichita Police Department for 28 years, ending his career at WPD as the Deputy Chief & Field Services Division Commander.

The process for finding a new Chief will begin in January 2023. The Chief of Police is a key member of the City’s leadership team and will guide a department of 64 personnel and a $6.2 million annual budget. More information regarding the position will be available at DerbyPolice.com
