Mayor Randy White has named the Derby Historical Museum as the recipient of the 2023 Mayor’s Award of Excellence. The award will be presented to the Derby Historical Museum volunteers at the Jan. 10 City Council meeting at 6:30 p.m. at Derby City Hall, 611 Mulberry Rd.
The award was established in 2002 as a way to honor an individual, family, organization, or business that has contributed significantly to the Derby community.
“The Derby Historical Museum is an integral part of our community,” said Mayor Randy White. “There is a need to tell Derby’s story, where we started and how we got to where we are today. Our museum volunteers play an important role in making this happen.”
The Derby Historical Museum is dedicated to the historical preservation of the Derby community. There are 16 rooms of artifacts and displays, plus exhibits throughout the hallways. The building opened in 1924 and served as a Derby school until 1994. It’s now listed on the National Historical Register.
Here are a few examples of the Museum’s recent initiatives:
- 70th Anniversary Celebration of the Derby Fire & Rescue Department
- Horses, Hats and Roses, a Kentucky Derby fundraiser
- 5th Annual Christmas Tree Gala and Bake Sale
- Established a blog and Instagram page and installed new signage along Woodlawn
- Reorganized and added to the First Responder’s Room and School Room
- School tours, July 4 museum tours and parade float
- Over 350 volunteer hours recorded in 2022
